You have probably heard these news terms being discussed in the papers or on TV. This is how to use them in English:

1. 軍火 - ammunition

With the regime crossing a "red line", Barack Obama plans to send weapons and ammunition to Syria's rebels, officials say.

2. 監控 - surveillance

Edward Snowden, 29, revealed himself as the source of top-secret documents about US National Security Agency surveillance programmes that were reported earlier by The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers. He is believed to be in Hong Kong.

3. 揮發性有機化合物 - volatile organic compounds

Among the nine newly identified "toxic" libraries, Lung Hing Public Library in Wong Tai Sin has the worst air quality. Its volatile organic compounds are over the standard limit by 100 per cent.

4. 質問 - interrogate

The Tamil Nadu police will interrogate hotelier Vikram Aggarwal in connection with the Indian Premier League betting scandal.

5. 維權人士 - human rights activist

Chen Guangcheng, the blind mainland human rights activist who has suffered imprisonment and beatings while fighting the country's one-child policy, received a standing ovation in the House of Commons in Britain, as he was presented with the first-ever Westminster Award for his contribution to "human rights, human life and human dignity".
