Week of May 28

You have probably heard these news terms being discussed in the papers or on TV. This is how to use them in English:

1. 龍捲風 - tornado

Last Monday a brutal tornado swept through the town of Moore, Oklahoma, in the United States.

2. 行政會議成員 - executive councillor

Compared with the controversy surrounding fellow executive councillor Franklin Lam Fan-keung last year, the political fallout from the investigation of Barry Cheung Chun-yuen's Hong Kong Mercantile Exchange could have been far heavier.

3. 焚化爐 - incinerator

The government says there is no alternative to expanding landfills until an incinerator can be built.

4. 不反對通知書 - letter of no objection

Protesters were worried they might be on the wanted list because no letter of "no objection" had been issued to the movement at the government headquarters.

5. 無限期休假 - on indefinite leave

Exco member, Franklin Lam Fan-keung, has been on indefinite leave of absence since November after coming under investigation by the Independent Commission Against Corruption.
