This dull affair fails to thrill

Adapted from Stephenie Meyer's novel of the same name, The Host recycles the love triangle from the author's Twilight series, replacing vampires and werewolves with two of the last surviving males on Earth.

A parasitic alien soul called Wanderer is injected into the body of Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan), who is forced to serve as a "host". But Melanie is strong-willed, and convinces Wanderer, or Wanda as she becomes known, to search for her uncle, brother and boyfriend Jared (Max Irons), who are hiding with other survivors in a dormant volcano.

The humans are at first determined to kill Melanie, believing that once a body has been conquered, its original owner is killed. But Melanie's uncle (William Hurt) wants to protect her body. Soon people realise Wanda is a kind soul who wants to help; then she falls for Ian (Jake Abel), even as Melanie is in love with Jared. So begins the predictable love triangle.

Sadly Ronan's strong performance, and some great visual effects and action can't compensate for a dull script. The Host is just a cheesy teen romance with an apocalyptic twist.
