A decent dose of pop-rock

When you first listen to Night Visions by Las Vegas band Imagine Dragons, it's hard not to compare it to the music that groups like The Killers and OneRepublic made a few years back.

The indie rockers indulge in heavy, pop beats, and write catchy, easy-listening melodies. With powerful vocals from lead singer Dan Reynolds, their music has a sense of nostalgia, transporting a listener to an era when pop-rock tunes played in every department store, from the early to mid-2000s.

On It's Time, Reynolds's raw vocals juxtapose well with upbeat mandolin - yes, that olde worlde string instrument - riffs, then it all escalates to an anthemic, electric guitar-laden rock tune.

The band's chart-topping hit, Radioactive, is another highlight, showcasing exactly what Reynolds' voice is capable of.

Imagine Dragons have a way to go to before they find their own distinctive sound and stop making music that sounds like everybody else's. But what they've done so far is a step in the right direction.
