Japanese movie I Have to Buy New Shoes (original title: Atarashii Kutsu wo Kawanakucha) is a sweet story directed by Eriko Kitagawa, a renowned writer of many Japanese TV series.

The story is made up of two parallel stories. One concerns Sen Yagami (Osamu Mukai), a young photographer in his 20s travelling to Paris and meeting an older freelance writer Aoi Teshigawara (Miho Nakayama, Love Letters) by chance. The other tells of Sen's sister Suzume (Mirei Kiritani) who travels with him to Paris, but is there to visit her art student boyfriend Kango (Gou Ayano) behind her brother's back.

Sen is abandoned quickly by his sister on the street once they arrive in Paris, leading to his encounter with Aoi. Unexpectedly he spends a wonderful week with Aoi who shows him around Paris and introduces him to her small circle. Slowly, they share stories and develop a rare friendship, despite a 20-year age gap. Meanwhile, Suzume gradually realises the huge differences between herself and Kango.

Unlike the unrealistic, dramatic love stories we often see on the big screen, this is a quiet, beautiful story which can be summed up by Aoi's line: "In life, people come and go. But some things will always stay, like the Eiffel Tower."
