If a rock band stays relevant for a decade, they can consider they've had a great career. Yet Japanese rock band L'Arc-en-Ciel (French for "rainbow") celebrated their 20th anniversary last year and show no signs of slowing down.

Their 12th album, Butterfly, came out this year, and features the seven singles released since their 2008 album.

Chase, their 40th single, released last December, features lead singer Hyde's dreamy vocals over guitar riffs and synth sounds. It has an epic feel: it's emotional but not overly loud. Things are slowed down for the seductive XXX (Kiss Kiss Kiss). Then again, everything by the band sounds sexy, thanks to Hyde's delivery.

Good Luck My Way is a straightforward rock song that appeared in the movie Fullmetal Alchemist: The Scared Star of Milos. It starts off being a bit messy as sounds come from all directions, but straightens out near the end - helped out by an awesome guitar solo from Ken.

Of the four new tracks, Wild Flower stands out; Hyde sings along solemnly to stringed instruments before the band join him and pick up the pace.

Butterfly's largely melodic tunes are a good listen. But since most of the tracks are old, the CD feels more like a compilation, rather than anything new.
