With its captivating, realistic story and brilliant cast, it's no wonder The Descendants won two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Actor for George Clooney.

It has also earned five Oscar nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, for Alexander Payne, and Best Actor (Clooney).

The story seems ordinary: Matt King (Clooney), a lawyer, has the casting vote on the sale of land that will earn millions of dollars for him and his relatives - the descendants of the title.

His work is interrupted when his wife, Elizabeth (Patricia Hastie), is critically injured in an accident. As she lies in a coma, he discovers the reality of his troubled marriage and dysfunctional family life. He struggles to cope as he cares for his two daughters, Scottie (Amara Miller), 10, and rebellious Alex (Shailene Woodley), 17.

It may seem an uninspiring storyline, but the beautifully directed film is presented in a refreshing way. Clooney does an amazing job in authentically conveying his character's torment - often without saying a word.

The girls, and Alex's teenage friend Sid (Nick Krause), are also utterly convincing, as they tackle a gripping roller coaster ride of the emotions. There are enough twists and turns to keep you absorbed until the final scene, which is very touching.

This film is a rare and beautiful story that will make you ponder the truth about life.
