Don't count on this for laughs

Yogi Bear leaps from the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series to the big screen in 3D. But not even the charm of the cuddly bear and enjoyable effects can make up for the thin plot and uninspired storyline.

In his signature green hat and tie, Yogi (voiced by Dan Aykroyd) and companion Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake) terrorise Jellystone Park campers as they always have. They invent ingenious devices to steal picnic baskets full of yummy food.

But when the self-serving Mayor Brown (Andrew Daly) - complete with Donald Trump hairdo - decides to convert Jellystone into a lucrative logging business, Yogi realises something has to be done. He teams up with Park Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh), his adversary in happier times.

The plot is bland and predictable, and most audience members will almost certainly be looking for more amusing antics than Yogi wiggling his chubby brown body.

When the ordeal ends after 82 minutes, everyone is bound to ask: Is that all the tricks director Eric Brevig has in his bag? The film can't hold a candle to other similarly inspired films, like the hilarious Garfield and Scooby-Doo.

Those who can still count their age on their fingers may enjoy a good laugh. But count me out.
