A friend for life

A friend for life

Dogs and cats have been around for more than 3,000 years. They have been used for hunting, transport and food.

But over the past 80 years or so, these animals have become our companions. They feel happy when they're with us and we feel safe - pets and humans have become inseparable. It's like a match made in heaven - the bond is strong.

But animal abuse has been a problem in Hong Kong. Although dogs and cats are loved dearly by their owners, there are still many that are being neglected, abandoned or abused. Many pet owners are enthusiastic about their animals in the beginning, but they gradually lose interest or find it too much work. They abandon their pets which end up on the streets or in shelters.

Did you know that at least one dog is put to sleep every hour by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department? Did you know that more than 700,000 animals are abused each year? When you are sleeping, at least eight dogs have been put to sleep. While you are having classes, watching TV or having dinner, many dogs are killed.

We can help these animals by donating food and money, and volunteering at different organisations. But the most important thing is to give your pet a loving home. Keeping a pet is a commitment. No animals should be abused, abandoned or tortured. They just need a place to live and someone to love. They love us unconditionally.

Remember, a dog is a man's best friend. They are a friend for life.
