Solid foundation for classics

Solid foundation for classics

Hong Kong Sinfonietta has become one of Hong Kong's most reputable orchestras. With renowned conductor Yip Wing-sie as music director, the orchestra has gained a great deal of recognition on the local and international stage.

Following the success of the first This is Classical Music in 2008, which used the idea of jeans to illustrate how classical music is universally accessible, This is Classical Music 2 uses the idea of a T-shirt to show how classical music can be a form of expression for everyone.

The album features 26 classical favourites, hand-picked by Yip. They include famous pieces from big names like J.S. Bach and Tchaikovsky, as well as from intimate pieces like Faur's Sicilienne.

The album opens with four classics: Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro Overture, Bach's super-soothing Air on the G and Badinerie, and Minuet in A by Boccherini. Unless you've spent your life under a rock, you can't help but have heard of these.

Unhappily, for a supposedly unstuffy album, there are too many extracts from Bizet's Carmen and The Nutcracker for most beginners to deal with.

Overall, though, this is a good place to start appreciating classical music.
