Two things initially attracted Kwok Chak-kwan to the Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Secondary) - ICT programme offered by The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK). One was the opportunity to become a qualified teacher. The second was the chance to gain a much deeper understanding of information and communication technology (ICT) and key developments in that field.
Currently a Year 4 student, Kwok has found the course intellectually stimulating and rewarding, and he describes his time at the university as a great learning experience.
“The programme has developed my knowledge and skills of how to be a professional teacher and of how to use ICT to solve problems in smarter ways,” he said. “The curriculum is well designed and suits my needs. It can stretch me to think in new ways and come up with creative solutions for real-world problems.”
He added that the academic staff leading the programme are all very knowledgeable in their respective fields. They are also helpful and approachable.
“They have always been supportive of my personal and professional growth, encouraging me to be open-minded about new perspectives, possibilities and challenges,” said Kwok, who is particularly grateful for the opportunity to work on ICT projects that could benefit the community.
For example, in his second year, he was involved in setting up an e-Learning platform to enhance student autonomy in language learning.
More recently, he has taken part in a project to develop a mobile app to predict the emotional status of care-givers for families dealing with dementia.
“The experience from these projects is invaluable in expanding my skill-set and knowledge,” Kwok said. “I feel I have become more confident and capable in using ICT for problem solving by stretching my boundaries, trying new technologies, and thinking out of the box.”
The Bachelor of Education (Honours) - ICT is a five-year, full-time programme which provides a wide range of knowledge, concepts and applications to develop problem-solving skills. It also gives students opportunities to appreciate the impact of ICT on modern society, as well as the pedagogical and subject knowledge, values, and practice essential for teaching ICT.
