When asked about accounting, most people would say it is “boring” and “auditing is tough”. As an accounting student, I’m here to argue that it’s actually a very interesting course.
Here are some tips on how you can make the most of your time at university.
Devote yourself to your interests
I am proud to be a student of the Department of Accountancy at City University of Hong Kong. I was interested in studying accounting (auditing in particular), before I even got into university.
I saw accounting as a study of the inner workings of a company. You can understand how money flows in a company and how to keep your business healthy.
At my university, courses on accounting not only teach you about accounting standards, they also give you an opportunity to learn about human interaction and the reasons behind certain business problems.
I was determined to be an auditor and kept that in mind throughout my studies. That became my motivation during hardships and served as a reminder that I should not give up.
Uncover your potential
University is a great place to explore interests and broaden your social network. I have been the president of the CityU Choir, CityU English Debating Team and a silver award winner at the China College Students’ Entrepreneurship Competition, which was held in 2016 in Chengdu.
I was also fortunate to join the Accounting Scholar Programme organised by my department. This provided me with a channel to communicate with professors and alumni in high managerial positions. These activities shaped who I am and validated my decision to become an auditor.
It is of utmost importance that you keep up to date with changes in the modern business world. Moreover, when confused, asking questions is never a bad thing. During an auditing internship in my third year, I asked my colleagues questions whenever I faced difficulties completing my tasks. This helped establish a good relationship with them and I avoided a lot of mistakes.
Live your own life
Do what you want at your own pace! I picked the right path for myself and am ready to start a new chapter as an auditor after graduation. All in all, don’t let what others think affect your choices. Auditing is not the only career for accounting students. There are other career choices in tax, consulting and forensic accounting, for example.
