I believe the best experiences in life come from the things that cause us to exceed our limits, doubt ourselves and explore things we have never done before. My most amazing experience in university comes from my work with TEDxCityUHongKong as a co-organiser for the upcoming event, “Pushing the envelope”.

The event is about real-life instances where people have pushed themselves beyond their comfort zones and as a result achieved new heights in their respective fields and careers. It addresses important questions such as “What’s stopping us from giving our best shot?”

I started off with TEDx as a volunteer in 2016. At the time, my goal was to find a way to become a permanent member because I admired the community and their teamwork. I always gave ideas and suggestions, and my efforts paid off a few months later when I was asked to join the team as the director of events management.

I totally identify with the event’s theme, “Pushing the envelope”.

Once I became director, I did not become complacent; I, in fact, worked harder and did my best. To my surprise – and delight – seven months later I was asked to take on the role of co-organiser.

Now, as a co-organiser and director of events management, I often find myself in situations that make me doubt myself but then I remember that I’ve been in similar situations before, and if I could do it then, nothing should stop me from doing it again. At TEDx I am blessed to have a wonderful, hardworking team. We have set high standards, and this is what sets us apart; we find that the things that scare us the most are the most rewarding.

Many young people think that maybe they are aiming too high. So they dial down their ambitions, making them easier to achieve. But in the process they don’t maximise their potential and often fail to grab the opportunities.

With our theme “Pushing the envelope”, we want to focus on the importance of pushing your limits to achieve something.

My only advice to you is that if you believe you can achieve something, go the extra mile to make your dream come true. Nothing should stop you, especially not fear, and especially not you.
