Healthy eating isn't easy

Governments around the world are doing more to promote healthy food. Many people have talked about the need for youngsters to eat healthier snacks while at school.

It is good to see schools taking action, but I'm not convinced it always works. There is a belief that if schools are serving students healthy food, we'll all suddenly have a healthy diet.

But youngsters can be picky eaters. I've seen schools holding events to encourage students to eat two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables each day. But much of this healthy food can end up going to waste. The students will often buy their own snacks anyway.

I think schools and parents need to think of original and creative ways to encourage youngsters to eat a better diet. And for our part, we need to learn to not be so picky with our food.

Thank you for your letter, Lok-man. Over the summer holidays, Team YP (that's us) tried to eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day. It was not easy.

It seems that it is always going to be a battle to get youngsters to eat their fruit and vegetables. A lot of it has to do with taste, I will admit that, but that can be easily fixed with some creative recipes. But more than that, we rarely see adverts for fresh strawberries or celery. Yet junk food is heavily advertised to youngsters to persuade them to spend their money on it.

This is one of those things where we all have to take responsibility. We live in one of the best cities in the world. We have so much choice. There is no excuse not to eat healthily.
