The arrival of Christmas always makes people happy. Hong Kong is filled with a wonderful atmosphere and gorgeous decorations. Everyone is talking about the festive season and looking forward to it.

Before Christmas, many families put up a Christmas tree, with lots of colourful baubles hanging on it and a shiny star on the top. We used to have one in our home, but decided to stop once we got a dog!

There are plenty of decorations on the streets and in shopping malls, too, including spectacular Christmas trees. Many tourists stop to take photos under these bright festive trees at night.

Another great thing about this time of year is that most schools give students a long break, which makes Christmas a lot more relaxing. Students can travel or just spend time with their families.

Children love exchanging presents with their friends and receiving gifts from their parents. I especially love getting surprise gifts - like last year, when I received a brand-new keyboard from my aunt.

Anyway, I am really looking forward to Christmas this year! It's a really exciting and meaningful festival!

From the editor

Thank you for your letter, Jessica. Amid all the doom and gloom, a bit of Christmas cheer can go a long way.

I must confess to personally being completely crazy about Christmas. I think setting aside a day to celebrate with family, in a spirit of joy and peace, is precious.

I know it seems like it’s a Christian holiday, it isn’t really. Some may think that only Christians should celebrate it but I think the idea of hope is universal. As we know, modern Christmas has far deeper roots than 2000 years, going back to pagan festivals to mark the end of winter. Most importantly, Christmas brings us hope.

From the Christian perspective, it’s hope in the form of a world saviour to help Man get on to the right path. But from a deeply global perspective it’s about a change in seasons. It’s the realisation that winter is over and spring is on the way. Many people have celebrations around this time of year, such as solstice, Hanukah, Kwanzaa and the New Year.

It also gives us reason to have a well-deserved break from our busy lives and take time to smile and wish our friends, and even strangers, a Merry Christmas.
