People are under a lot of stress these days, especially teenagers. This is really worrying.

Lots of people blame the education system. They think that the exam-oriented sytem is what’s causing all the problems. Students spend a lot of time doing assignments, going to tutorial centres, and studying, and they don’t get enough sleep. But actually, I think parents are the main reason young people are stressed.

Parents think good grades are the only way to be successful. They want their children to be doctors, lawyers or pilots.

My definition of success is different. Having a good relationship with others is a sign of a successful life. Having friends ensures we don’t feel lonely and can find our place in society.

Being happy is another key to success. Doing the things we love is a great way to be happy, and when we do things we love, we are far more likely to be successful. This brings us true satisfaction; the kind that can’t be bought. People should spend time discovering what they truly like doing.

Parents should redefine their definition of success. They should respect their child’s choices, and show love and support.

Thank you for your letter, Michael, and it comes at an important time, when so many students are feeling the pressure to perform. The education system is an easy scapegoat because immediately people want to blame someone or something when tragedy strikes.

Parents are another easy target. But that is not always true either. While some parents might say cruel things to their children the vast majority just want their children to succeed in life. And they do this the only way they know how - education. If that sounds like your mom or dad, go give them a hug right now and think of ways to thank them.

An attitude of gratitude always goes a long way to giving us happiness.
