Hong Kong student achieves dream of conquering the Seven Summits

Face Off: Should lab-grown meat replace traditional animal farming?

We asked our readers to write an essay titled "My Day out with Shawn Mendes". Here is one of the entries. It has not been edited.

An international pop star who is perpetually under the eyes of the camera. How would it be possible for him to explore “Asia’s Word City” without getting mobbed by ecstatic 12-year-olds? Disguises.

Our first stop would be the bustling streets of Mong Kok, where I’d teach Shawn the most important skill that distinguishes a true “Hong Konger” from anyone else: bargaining. After he learns the classic “walk away” where we fake a rejection and wait for the seller to chaise us, we pick up wigs and fake made-in-China Ray-Bans.

Now that the “gweilo” is under-cover, we stop over for some “Yum Cha” and devour innumerable assortment of dim-sum delicacies.  I’ll also definitely take a boomerang of Shawn poking his chopsticks at a bun, watching the custard come oozing out!

There’s also no way I’m spending a day with my, absolute favourite, heart-throb singer without re-creating a “car-pool karaoke” (and sounding like a creepy stalker, for that matter). However, instead of a car, it will obviously be the Hong Kong version- on the MTR! We can jam out to Treat you Better and Bad Reputation whilst I teach Shawn the several horrible puns that can be made out of MTR stations. Like, “Hey, Shawn, what are you “Tin King” about?”

We will then  get off at “Victoria Peak” and hike up the “Peak Circle Walk” where Shawn can witness the most breath-taking and mesmerising sunset with the entire, picturesque view of the Hong Kong harbour and skyline.

After taking the tram down; Fish Balls, Cheung Fan, and Siu Mai from one of the traditional food stalls will be our dinner as we eat it on our ferry across the harbour to Harbour City.

One of the many wonderful traits about Shawn is the immense compassion and love he has for his fans. That’s why, before the night ends, he’ll rip off the disguise and have a free, short, mini-concert at the classic performance destination right outside the steps Harbour City Mall.

Good views, good food, good vibes. Everyone feels at home in “Home-Kong,” and so will Shawn Mendes from all the love and beautiful experiences he will receive from the best city in one amazing day, with me.
