We asked our readers to write an essay titled "My Day out with Shawn Mendes". Here is one of the entries. It has not been edited.

Hong Kong’s world-famous shopping malls may be an obvious tourist attraction, but if I could spend a day with Shawn Mendes I’d make it much more meaningful. The countless cities he’s toured have the luxurious stores, the picturesque views, you name it. What makes Hong Kong special can’t be found in something tangible, because it’s the culture. And in one day I would show Shawn everything I could about our culture, because you can’t find that anywhere else.

There’s nothing that defines our culture better than our food. Luckily for Shawn, there are no tomatoes in street food (because Shawn really hates tomatoes and so do I). I’d take him to the bustling streets of Mong Kok for some authentic Hong Kong food. Shawn would have to try curry fishballs, egg waffles, siu mai and the like. Whilst we’re there, I’d show him the markets and teach him how to bargain for an even better deal.

After that we’d take the MTR across the harbour. In an isolated commercial building in Central lies an old record shop, forgotten by many. Cantopop is truly unique to Hong Kong culture and is a large part of our musical identity. There Shawn can experience the wonder of Cantopop and I’d do my best to translate the lyrics, most likely failing. It might even be some sort of musical awakening for him.

If there’s one thing I look forward to more than Christmas, it’s a good hotpot; and a homemade one at that. I’d take Shawn with me to the wet market in North Point to buy ingredients before heading home to prepare the feast. Shawn could eat to his heart’s content, hopefully without getting accidentally scalded by boiling water in the pot. And that would round off my day with Shawn Mendes.
