Congrats to our #YPIG10 winner who showed off HK's unique and unexpected beauty!

We received SO MANY incredible entries for our #YPIG10 competition that it made choosing one winner really hard! So Young Post would like to thank our participants for their enthusiasm and patience while we decided on who deserves the grand prize. (There might have been fist thumping and detailed deliberating involved.)

Please join us in congratulating our winner: @ceiira on Instagram who wowed us with her creativity in capturing and presenting this amazing shot of Instagram Pier

Congratulations, @ceiira, you win a brand new Canon M10 mirrorless camera with two lenses, and we know you'll continue to capture many more beautiful images with it. Make sure you share it with us by tagging @youngposthk!

Honourable mentions:

And here is why the YP team had so much trouble deciding: there were simply too much talent by those who entered the competition! Here are some of the standout shots for the team:

Sorry , I'm not judging the post's decisions, but I really want to point out, since the winning photo was most likely photoshopped (which was also stated "fake" by the photographer, although I don't know if it's real or not) , since the reflections are not symmetrical (be aware of the clouds, humans etc.) .

If it's really photoshopped, my question is: should the beauty of Hong Kong presented by a photoshopped photo? Furthermore, should the abilty of capturing and presenting photos be awarded by simply photoshopping? Or it's awarding the abilty of photoshopping?

Let's have a look at other competitions, which we could find that many of them doesn't accept highly edited photos, the main reason is simple: fake and not real "photography" but "photography with photoshop".

I hope that Young Post could answer my questions, and overall, I really disagree with the sickening trend in photoshopped photos everywhere, I hope the Young Post could answer my questions and join me in banning highly edited photos from destroying the core-values of photography. Thank you.

thank you for your comment. It is wonderful to see you cared enough to write us such a detailed message to express your concerns and perspective.

Yes, you're right in that the winning image is clearly digitally enhanced. However, for this competition we asked for "the the best photo you take" at one of the 10 assigned locations, and to "be creative!" We never disallowed editing of the photographs, because we were looking for creativity inspired by one or more of the 10 locations.

It's obvious, aside from the caption, that the image doesn't show the real reflection. But taking multiple photographs of the same location and layering them together to create one image, or adding to the original image in a way that doesn't distort the meaning of the photo, is not against the rules. In fact, it is indeed a very creative way to showcase her perspective of Instagram Pier.

The core values of photography has always been to tell a story and to show the storyteller's perspective. The same as it is with art the came before photography: it's about a story, an interpretation and a perspective. (Van Gogh probably didn't see swirly patterns in the sky when he painted Starry Night! lol)

The evolution of photography, as we all must evolve, has expanded to include editing. And while we certainly agree that misleading Photoshopping can and is detrimental in many ways, within the bounds of reason, editing an image the way it's been done here doesn't make it less real or beautiful. The winner is merely telling her story through her photographic interpretation of Instagram Pier. You may not agree with the decision, and Young Post respects that and your effort throughout the competition. But the way she interprets photography, the way she embraces how photography has evolved and taking that on to grow and expand her skills as an artist and photographer, and her daring to show us something different and thought-provoking IS the unique and unexpected beauty of Hong Kong and her people we wish to celebrate.

Thank you again for your message and for sharing your talent with us through our competition. Keep taking photographs that tell your story, and keep creating art the way you enjoy it! We look forward to seeing your growth and development as an artist!
