Talking point: What time do you think school should start and end and why?

Hate it when you can't talk back? Well, you can with Young Post. Have your say and share with students around Hong Kong.

I think school should start at 9am and end at 2pm so that we can sleep longer. A five-hour school day would be comfortable for students and teachers.

Rheneas Choi, 17, Shatin Tsung Tsin Secondary School

I think school should start at 9am and end at 4pm. Most schools in Hong Kong start at 8am. I think that's too early. Students don't have enough time to sleep. According to the sleep guidelines from the National Institutes of Health in the US, it is recommended that teenagers sleep 9-10 hours a day. If students could get up an hour later, they wouldn't be so tired and fall asleep during the lessons, which would increase their learning efficiency. School should not end later than 4pm because students have extracurricular activities and tutorial classes after school. If school ends too late, students will not have enough time to finish their homework after they get home and will have to go to bed too late.

Desmond Chan, 13, King Ling College

In winter, many students get sick, and by coming to school, they will infect their fellow classmates. To prevent this situation, I think schools should close in winter. Like animals that hibernate, students could have winter holidays in December and January every year so that they could rest more during the holidays.

Sukhmanjit Kaur, 16, St Margaret's Girls' College, HK

If school is going to start early, say around 8am, then it should end early, as well. If it starts an hour or two later, then it is all right if it ends after it is dark outside. My spirits just go down if I get out of school and the sun is down, because it feels as if I spent my whole day with my nose in the books, and that's not very healthy. It is important for students to spend some time away from books, but they need spare hours for that.

Amy Yeung, 19, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

I think school should start at 11am so I can sleep in later and end at 4pm.

Sorry but most of your answers are not the best option, don't forget that scientists found the best time to learn is in the morning, and evening. It's not possible to find a time for everyone. I would say learn in the morning and read in the evening. Your mind has to be fresh and logical to read journal papers due to level of content requires thinking most of the time. You can find articles from http://****journalfirst.com, and try yourself to see what's good for you.
