Wah Yan's Vincent Suen is eyeing gold in freestyle events.The rivalry between two stars will take centre stage at this month's Division One Inter-school Swimming Competition (Kowloon and Hong Kong Island). All eyes will be on Vincent Suen Wai-cheong of Wah Yan College, Kowloon, and La Salle College's Martin Lam Ho-yin, as they battle it out in A Grade freestyle events at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool.
Last year, Vincent won gold and silver medals in the A Grade 50 and 100-metre freestyle, respectively. But this time he'll face a powerful competitor in Martin, who picked up two gold medals in the B Grade 50 and 100m freestyle last year.
Vincent's coach, Lesley Chan Ka-hei, said the Wah Yan student's medal chances look good as he is a more experienced athlete now.
"Vincent always keeps himself in a stable condition. But his competitor is also very strong. This year is very competitive because both of them can win gold," he said.
Meanwhile, Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) will be determined to capture the overall title for the 23rd time in a row.
In the A Grade 200m individual medley, DBS' Ng Yan-kin will take on St Joseph College's (SJC) Fung Chun-ho. Last year, Yan-kin won gold, with Chun-ho taking the silver.
SJC coach David Chu Lap-yin said that Chun-ho needed to focus more on his turning and underwater kick. Chun-ho will also take part in the 100m backstroke, in which he won a bronze last year.
SJC's Wong Ho-kiu has set his sights on gold in the A Grade 50 and 100m breaststroke, but Chu said the competition would be really tough. "A 10th of a second could decide who the winner will be," he said.
There are no clear favourites in the relay events, although DBS will again be the team to beat.
The Inter-school Swimming Competition 2015-2016 will be held on October 15 and 28 at Kowloon Park Swimming Pool
