Achievements Yvette, 17, is a member of the Hong Kong swimming team. She holds 13 Hong Kong long-pool and short-pool records. She won silver in the 4x100 metres medley relay at last year's East Asian Games.
She also won a silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Swimming Championships on the mainland last year. At last year's third Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam, she won five golds and one silver medal.
Yvette was awarded a Zespri Outstanding Junior Athlete Award this year.
How she qualified "A series of qualifying competitions for the Youth Olympic Games [YOG] started in March last year. [Planned by the International Olympic Committee, the first ever YOG will be held in Singapore in August.] I met the YOG qualifying standard at the first competition in Australia, and kept it up in other competitions. I also broke some Hong Kong records in these competitions," says Yvette.
"Originally, four swimmers were the lucky ones to represent our city at YOG. But now only two of us can go, as the organising committee cut the quota by half. I am glad I can still continue my YOG trip."
Soundbite "I would like to thank my parents and my school for their support during my preparations for the YOG. My principal and counsellor gave me advice, and helped me catch up on schoolwork I missed during the qualification competitions," says Yvette.
"I look forward to meeting Michael Phelps, who won eight golds at the Beijing Olympics, during the YOG Chat with Champions cultural and education programme. His attitude made him unbeatable in the Olympics and World Championships. I'm sure I can learn a lot from him."
From her coach "I'm very glad to be Yvette's coach. She has been special in the swimming field since she began to compete. I have full confidence that she will have an outstanding performance at YOG, as she is smart and has great aspirations," says coach Leung Chun-kin.
"It is great to see that she's also excellent in academics and other pursuits, like photography."
Insight for the Games "My target at the YOG is to win medals in all four events that I'll compete in. I will treat this as a rehearsal for the Asian Games in Guangzhou later this year, and the Olympics in London two years later."
