Heads up football fans – former Real Madrid star Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima is in town. The footballing legend is in Hong Kong to visit the newly launched Ronaldo Academy and to meet some of the academy’s students. He arrived in Hong Kong yesterday afternoon.

Ronaldo last visited Hong Kong in 2003 during Real Madrid’s Asia Tour with fellow galacticos (Spanish for galactics or superstars) Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and David Beckham. The exhibition match was held at Hong Kong Stadium and attracted more than 40,000 spectators.

Ronaldo has set up football schools in more than 50 locations across Brazil, China and the United States. The Ronaldo Academy Hong Kong was launched in January this year, with courses being conducted at West Island School and the Hong Kong Academy in Sai Kung.

Ronaldo will meet some Real Madrid Foundation’s students at Hong Kong Football Club this Friday. The foundation is Real Madrid’s way of promoting, both in Spain and abroad, the values in sport, and how sport can be used as an educational tool. Young people of varying backgrounds in Hong Kong, aged seven to 17, have been given the chance to become sportsmen thanks to the foundation, and have been offered world-class football and basketball training.

On Saturday, the Brazilian football phenom will also greet fans in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Harbour City as Real Madrid’s club ambassador for the Dreams Foundation – Real Madrid Foundation’s partner in Hong Kong. The event in Harbour City will focus on promoting the foundation’s social and sports projects throughout Asia.
