Facebook appeared to be down earlier today, with the social media site saying it is working on fixing the issue.
"Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can," Facebook said on its website.
Users from the United States and Hong Kong reported that they were unable to log on to the website. Instagram, which was acquired by Facebook in 2012, was also inaccessible.
Representatives at Facebook were not immediately available for comment. Instagram said on its Twitter account that it was aware of an outage and was working on a fix.
Both social media platforms were restored shortly after 3pm (local time), with the outage lasting roughly 40 minutes.
