Top ten news selected by secondary students announced by Hok Yau Club.

Hok Yau Club, a youth interest non-governmental organisation, asked around 75,000 secondary school students to pick the top 10 news stories of 2014 from a list of 30 in November and December.

The disappearance of flight MH370 and the outbreak of Ebola sent the greatest shockwaves through Hong Kong’s classrooms last year, a survey has found.

Local story of students boycotting classes over the dispute of universal suffrage came third, by a narrow margin. Following that is the viral ice bucket challenge in summer and wide concern over Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The controversial issue of Hong Kong’s political reform has made it to top 10 for the first time, in 23 years of the survey’s history. The stories of months-long Occupy Central and framework of universal suffrage set by People’s Congress came seventh and ninth separately.

The club found the top news of students’ choice are more diverse this time. The top 10 include local news, mainland, Taiwan and international news; and also covers political and social issues, public health issues, aviation tragedy and celebrity news.
