1K VS AI Chinese Chess Challenge pits more than 1,000 Hong Kong students against Artificial Intelligence program
Event sets a world record for “The Most People Battling against an Artificial Intelligence Chinese Chess System on the Spot Simultaneously”
There were more than 1,000 students from 72 schools participating today!Hongkongers set a new world record yesterday, when 1,400 students met at Queen Elizabeth Stadium to play Chinese Chess. They will go down as history as setting a record for the most people battling against an Artificial Intelligence Chinese chess system on the spot simultaneously.
As part of the Chinese Chess Challenge 1K VS AI event, primary and secondary school students from 72 schools concurrently played a total of five endgames against an AI Chinese Chess system in the first round.
And there were some human victors. Eleven-year-old Xavier Wong from St Joseph’s Primary School won the champion in the final round of primary school division by defeating AI in 36 seconds with five moves. In the final round of the secondary school division, Denis Li, 16, from Pok Oi Hospital Tang Pui King Memorial College, won in the final round of secondary school division in one minute and 24 seconds with seven moves.
“I think human beings are more competitive in playing Chinese Chess because our minds are more flexible than AI,” Denis told Young Post.
The other finalists in the primary school category were first runner-up So Lut-chai from Tai Po Old Market Public School and second runner-up Chan Hiu-fung from CCC Heep Woh Primary School. In the secondary category, the first runner-up was Law Chek-fung from Pok Oi Hospital Tang Pui King Memorial College, while Choi Yat-chun of Yan Chai Hospital Lan Chi Pat Memorial Secondary School was the second runner-up.
The Asian Grandmaster of Chinese Chess Chan Chun-kit was also invited to play an exhibition match with the AI Chinese Chess system.
Prior to the battle, the young participants attended a series of Chinese Chess training workshops.
The event was co-organised by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer and Cyberport, and aims to promote the art of Chinese Chess and Stem education, especially in the application and development of AI.
