A group of mechanical engineering students from the University of Hong Kong has won a global competition that challenges students to improve different areas of air travel. Team DAELead beat fierce competition to win the €30,000 first prize with their design for a Private Stowage Compartment (PSC) for hand luggage underneath passengers’ feet.
The judges were impressed with the students' - third year students Darwing Li Kin-wing, Leo Lo Kwun-yu, Hayden Li Hean-ting and Stewart Leung Shu-wai - innovative idea to make the most of the unused and often forgotten space aboard the aircraft to improve passengers' experience. The new aircraft cabin design puts the space between the cabin floor and cargo ceiling to good use, and is also an alterative for passengers for whom accessing the overhead compartment may be a challenge.
The final part of the competition took place in Toulouse, France, where five teams – from the original 365 teams, comprising nearly 5,500 students in the first round – spent a week refining their prototypes and testing them.
