The Chief Executive and the Executive Council have approved the application of the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) to become a fully-fledged university.

According to a government press release, the IEd will be retitled to the Education University of Hong Kong pending Legco approval of the Education (Amendment) Bill 2016 which will be submitted on March 2.

The Secretary for Education, Eddie Ng Hak-kim says that the award of university title recognises its efforts and contributions over the years, and will boost public confidence in the HKIEd and its graduates.

"We are satisfied with the finding of the University Grants Committee (UGC) that the HKIEd is fully worthy of joining the ranks of the other UGC-funded universities. It also testifies to the development of our higher education sector, as more institutions are found to possess the qualities and attributes commonly expected of a university," Ng said.
