People question the timing, the motive, and the substance of the government's "Appreciate Hong Kong" campaign
Joshua Wong says the timing of the campaign is problematic.Student leader Joshua Wong Chi-fai says the government should have waited until after the district council elections to launch its grand plan to "unite Hong Kong".
Speaking to Young Post yesterday, Wong said the campaign would promote pro-establishment candidates in Sunday's district council elections.
"The campaign will offer support to the public, like giving free tickets to amusement parks and museums. But its timing is problematic as the campaign shouldn't have an advertising effect," said Joshua.
The "Appreciate Hong Kong" campaign, was announced on Monday. It is backed by the government, the business community, and other sectors. It will offer 10 key items, including inviting low-income families to amusement parks, and having public museums open for free in January.
Legislative Council member Tam Yiu-chung told Young Post that he hoped the campaign would bring Hongkongers together.
"The campaign will especially help the socially vulnerable groups. It will build up a positive image of the government. But other plans like more opportunities of social mobility can be included, too," said Tam.
But Civic Party lawmaker Dennis Kwok Wing-hang said the government should do something useful, such as offering more job opportunities to young people, reforming the political system, and upholding the rule of law.
