Keep it real

Just be yourself. If you’re normally a tomboy, it won’t make any sense to someone if suddenly you start acting very girlie. The person you’re trying to impress won’t be seeing the real you.

A promise is a promise

I think it’s important to keep all the promises you make. Promises aren’t always easy to keep, so before you promise to do something, you should think carefully about whether you’re truly able to do it. That way, people will see you as reliable and trustworthy.

Victoria Law Man-kei, 12, Maryknoll Fathers’ School

Mind your manners

I think the best way to impress someone you like is through politeness. If you are polite, people will see you as someone kind and thoughtful. Manners cost nothing.

Direct message

I would say “I love you” directly to the person I want to impress on one very special day: May 20. In Mandarin, May 20 spoken out loud sounds close to wo ai ni which means “I love you”. I think that would be a very sweet gesture.

Hui Man-ling, 16, Immaculate Heart of Mary College

True facts of life

The key to impressing somebody you like is honesty. If you are honest, then people will trust you and feel comfortable around you. If you lie or break someone’s trust, it can be hard to get it back. It’s always best to start (and end) with the truth.

Saima, 17, St. Margaret’s Girls’ College Hong Kong

Smart cookie

I think presenting home-made cookies to someone is the best way to impress them, because they are bound to appreciate the time and effort you have put into doing something nice for them. As an added touch, I would decorate the cookies with smiling emoji faces, and include a note wishing the person a good day.

Angela Wu Yan-tung, 12, Maryknoll Fathers’ School

Play ball

Find out their interests. If the person you like loves basketball, then strike up a conversation about it or invite them for a play about. With a bit of luck, though, you’ll find a common interest, and then you’ll have something you can truly bond over – not to mention being able to impress them with your skills in that hobby!

Hannah Ho, 12, Maryknoll Fathers’ School

Grand gesture

You can impress someone you care about by making a special gesture, like buying them a gift or flowers, or baking a cake

Michelle Han, Tak Nga Secondary School

Clean and decent

I think that personal neatness is a key factor when trying to make a good impression on someone, because it’s something that’s very noticeable. Being dirty or untidy sends a message to people that you don’t really care, so if you want to prove that you do care, try to make an effort to be presentable.

Ling Ho-i, 15, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

Laughter is the best medicine

The best way to impress someone you like is through humour! Making people laugh makes them feel comfortable and at ease around you, and they’re not likely to forget you in a hurry. Just make sure your jokes are in good taste.

Anderson Li, 12, Christian Alliance International School
