Gag on greens

Definitely Brussels sprouts. I’ve always had a dislike for vegetables, but I can usually eat any greens except for these. I have this weird gag reflex that is triggered upon contact with them.

Slimy sauce

Snails. Think of the slime. And the smell. I tried eating them on my trip to France but – and maybe it was just me hallucinating – I saw the snail stare back at me and say: “Don’t you dare eat me!” I just couldn’t bring it to my mouth. Gross.

Six-legged snacks

I would never ever eat insects. Not even fried ones. Have you ever seen those insect lollipops? You’ll cry in disgust if you haven’t. Full-bodied creepy crawlies on sticks. Ew.

Rotten eggplants

Who likes eggplants? Not me, that’s for sure. Eggplants are the mushiest of all foods and taste the worst! Eggplants truly are gross.

Ady Lam, 11, Island School

Transparent intestines, anyone?

Surströmming is a Swedish dish. It is basically preserved fish, but it has a reputation for being the smelliest food on Earth. Its smell has been likened to trash, diapers and basically the worst pongs in the world partying together. Not to mention, it looks like transparent intestines. I am definitely never going to try it!

Can’t they eat it outside?

Durian. It’s called the “king of fruits” but it smells like a toxic bomb! It’s so smelly that I have to hide in my room when my family eats it!

Sherrie Mak, 15, St Clare’s Girls’ School

No entrails, I entreat you

I don’t like to eat beef entrails because it’s so disgusting. Although it’s supposed to be healthy, I simply can’t put up with the taste.

Doris Zhao, 16, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

Flaming lips

Try all you want, but you’ll never get me to eat spicy peppers. I have extreme sensitivity to spicy foods, and I feel like my mouth is on fire if I try eating something spicy!

Arella Ng, 11, Christian Alliance P. C. Lau Memorial International School

I like my parsley sparsely

I would never eat parsley. I think it is like roadside weeds. Are you sure it’s not toxic? It is put in soups for fragrance, but for me, it’s completely unpalatable.

Gigi Chan, 16, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School

Hear me raw

The one food that I could never bring myself to eat is sushi! Almost everyone I know loves sushi, but I definitely don’t. The texture of cold, hard rice and raw seafood in my mouth makes me gag. Just the smell of it is enough to put me off!
