Hop on

I always get hiccups, so a lot of my friends have been giving me suggestions for cures. The best cure for hiccups happens to be hopping around in a circle and saying "pineapple" five times. At first, I didn't believe her, but then it worked. From then on, it has become one of my top hiccup cures among a bunch of other cures.

Nine-time wonder

Whenever I get hiccups, my mum would tell me to have nine sips of water - a remedy from my granny. It works every single time, though I don't understand the principle behind it.

Hold on!

The best cure for hiccups is to hold your breath for a minute, some say. But I don't believe it because every time I've had hiccups and used that trick, I hiccup while holding my breath. That makes a horrible noise. This is incredibly intolerable! Don't trust that "cure"!

Hanging around

Hanging upside down - on a sofa or bed. It's an amazing cure.

For crying out loud!

Keep on hiccupping as deafeningly loud as you can, until all sleepyheads in the classroom have woken up and the teacher has glared at you. Once this wonderful limelight shines on you, your hiccups will be gone. Trust me, this works every time.

Scared silly

I've heard that getting a scare is the best cure for hiccups. This is assuming you can find a friend to scare you. This is a good method to solve the problem.

Rubbing the wrong way

I heard hiccups can be stopped by rubbing the first section of your index finger continuously, though I later discovered it is actually a way to stimulate digestion. I guess whoever told me the so-called cure must have mixed up the stomach with the breathing system.

Language no barrier

It's simply dreadful when you keep hiccupping even when you've swallowed a gallon of water. But I still do it anyway. There was one time I was so obsessed with finding water, I got a bit sidetracked and started chanting "water" in multiple languages. By the time I got to German, the hiccups were completely gone. Works like a charm every time.

Pickled cure

Pickle water!!! I know it sounds nasty and sickening. But I tried it once, and it did work. When you chuck down a mouthful of pickle water, its sourness will overwhelm your throat. Therefore, hiccups will no longer be a problem, but with the aftertaste of vinegar in your throat, you'll want to burp.

Get this into your head!

There's a myth that sticking the corner of a tissue paper on your forehead can stop hiccups. I was quite sceptical at first, but it actually works! And since I'm a big believer in science, my conclusion is that distraction (tissue papers, or anything else that shifts your attention) is the best way to cure hiccups.
