TV shows used to treat the holiday of Halloween as just that: a holiday. They'd make one Halloween special in their first season and then repeat it every year after that. Not so with the Simpsons. They've been making their Treehouse of Horror specials for 27 years now, an annual trilogy of tales that satire horror movies, surreal TV, and even classic literature. Here are some of the best:

Homer3 (Homer Cubed)

This one is based on an old Twilight Zone episode, but the Simpsons takes it to another dimension - literally. When Homer is trying to hide from his sisters-in-law, he stumbles into another dimension - the third one. Craziness ensues as this 2D character has trouble understanding his new form: "What’s going on here? I’m so bulgy."

Night of the Dolphins

Lisa, ever the environmentalist, tries to do nature a good turn and releases a dolphin from captivity. But guess what? Dolphins are pretty smart, and they're tired of us polluting the oceans, so they're going to unite and do something about it. Uh-oh.

The Monkey's Paw

While vacationing in Morocco, Homer buys a mysterious monkey's paw, which is said to grant its owner three wishes. Of course, just like in the short story of the same name by author WW Jacobs, wishes aren't always everything you hope for ...

Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores

The people of Springfield love their commercialised little city, with its fancy billboards and advertising mascots - that is until they come to life and wreak havoc, destroying the town. What will the people do?

Send in the Clones

Homer buys a hammock that turns out to be enchanted: one turn in it produces an exact clone of him! Now Homer has someone to do half his work ... so why not create more clones to do the rest? Works fine until the clones start making their own copies to get out of work.

You Gotta Know When To Golem

Based on the legend of the Golem of Prague, a mud-clay monster that is brought to life to protect the Jewish people in the Czech Republic's capital. It turns out Krusty has a Golem stashed away in his props room...which is why Bart decides to steal it.

The Genesis Tub

Another parody of the Twilight Zone. This time, Lisa is working on a science fair project, seeing if cola will dissolve a tooth. After a static shock from Bart, she finds that she's created microscopic life on the tooth, with a society that evolves fast enough to build a shrink ray that can bring in their creator.

The Island of Dr Hibbert

Chances are at some point in school you'll read The Island of Doctor Moreau, by HG Wells. It's a good story, so the Simpsons figured they'd have their take on it, too, with Dr Hibbert taking over the role as the mysterious doctor.

I've Grown a Costume on your Face

One of the best parts of Halloween is getting to see everyone's costumes. But when a witch isn't happy about how she's treated, she places a curse on the Halloween partiers and turns everyone into the thing they're dressed as. Good news for some, but not for everyone...

The Raven

Another one that you'll probably read in at least one English class, Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven.

This time, rather than put their own spin on it, they present a word for word reading of the entire poem, with none other than James Earl Jones (Darth Vader himself) providing the spooky voice for it.

Tweenlight

Is there anyone reading this who hasn't read the Twilight books or seen the movies? Well here Lisa gets the Bella treatment and Milhouse gets the weak corner of the love triangle.
