She still shows off her impressive vocal range, but mainland singer Jane Zhang (aka the Dolphin Princess) puts aside her signature whistle register and mixes more R'n'B into her latest album, The Seventh Sense.
The album has a carefree and confident vibe. The first song, the upbeat I Am Mine (我是我的) summarises the album's theme of being happy with yourself.
The highlight is the catchy title song, whose style is reminiscent of Usher's U Got It Bad.
Jay Chou and Khalil Fong each contributed a song, adding Taiwanese and Hong Kong flavours to the album; Is There Any? (有沒有) is obviously Chou's work, the verses running so fast that the lyrics are indiscernible. Zhang admitted to Taiwan's United Daily newspaper that she nearly chewed off her tongue recording it.
Several lacklustre love songs such as Bookmark (書籤) take points off the album. Zhang wrote some of the lyrics, but they're a bit uninspiring. Maybe she needs an eighth sense to help with that?
