The final line up has been confirmed for Summer Sonic festival, and this year looks set to be the festival’s hugest edition so far. The annual Japanese bash, held at both Osaka and Tokyo, will roll out hundreds of bands across seven stages, with hit-making heavyweights from all over the world flying in to party.

Pop hitmakers Calvin Harris and Black Eyed Peas will headline the Saturday in Tokyo and the Sunday in Osaka, while rockers Foo Fighters and Babymetal will headline the Sunday in Tokyo and the Saturday in Osaka.

The Sam Willows can’t wait for you to hear their new album

All day long, the Marine Stage will be packed with some of the biggest names in music, from 5 Seconds of Summer, Charlie XCX, Royal Blood and All Time Low. Meanwhile, anthemic British rockers Kasabian and French favourites Phoenix will top the Mountain Stage on day one in Tokyo, while Britpop icon Liam Gallagher will play day two in Osaka. The weekend will also see Tik Tok singer Kesha make her comeback with hits from her triumphant new album, alongside retro crooner Rick Astley and EDM duo Axwell Ingrosso.

After playing in Hong Kong this month, US alternative group Lany are jetting to Japan to make their Summer Sonic debut, alongside emerging British singer-songwriter Declan McKenna and shape-shifting musical maestro Blood Orange – a favourite at last year’s Clockenflap festival.

Should Cantopop be replaced by K pop?

As usual, the festival will be a great chance to catch all your favourite Japanese acts and discover new obsessions too. On the Beach Stage, singer Chanmina will get the crowd moving, and rocker Seiko Oomori will shake things up with her rebellious punk-influenced sound.

The Sam Willows will tease a few new songs from their upcoming album on the Island Stage alongside fellow Singaporeans Wicked Aura, and Chinese rising stars Yoja Jiang and The Next Door Band.

Festival-goers on the hunt for quirky sounds should look out for indie pop quartet Bradio, hip hop act Creepy Nuts, and the jazzy CRCK/LCKS. Girl groups Little Glee Monster, Keyakizaka46, Faky and TRF are set to dazzle on the smaller stages, while K-pop fans can look forward to the appearance of heartthrobs Monsta X, DAY6, KARD and Hyukoh.

Music-lovers with super stamina can stay out rocking into the early hours at the Hostess Club All-Nighter at the Tokyo venue on Saturday night featuring British indie groups Mogwai and The Horrors, plus US guitar goddess St Vincent.

Summer Sonic 2017 will be held on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 August. Full line up and tickets available at summersonic.com. Day passes are HK$1,172; weekend passes are HK$2,132.
