Goosebumps is a fun popcorn movie that won't make you scream [Review]
With Halloween right around the corner, it's time to look for things that will give us…Goosebumps.
The film adaption of the well-loved kids' horror book series Goosebumps may not make you scream in fright, but it pulls out all the stops with a story filled with as many iconic characters and monsters as possible.
Zach (Dylan Minnette) moves next door to the mysterious Goosebumps author R.L. Stine (Jack Black) and his daughter Hannah (Odeya Rush). Stine's books have a secret: if one of the original manuscripts is opened, it releases a real-life monster into the world. A series of mishaps leads to not one, but all of the monsters being freed, so of course it's up to Zach to help Stine and Hannah trap them.
Black gives a funny edge to Stine's stuffy loner, and young actors Minnette and Rush have great on-screen chemistry.
The worst part of the film is sidekick Champ (Ryan Lee), who contributes nothing with his cowardly nerd stereotype.
It's no Oscar-worthy film, but the books weren't exactly high-literature either.
Self-aware in the same way as the Lego Movie, it's a fun, popcorn film to help set the mood for the spooky holiday.
