Lenka's last album Shadows may have seemed a little gloomy, but she's back with a double dose of positivity in her fourth record, The Bright Side. It's no musical revolution, nor does it go very deep into the Australian singer's emotions (despite a song called Go Deeper), but it's so infectiously chipper it's the perfect mood-booster.
"I was just looking/ but I started living on the bright side …/There's room over here," she sings in the title track, inviting us into her upbeat, lollipop-filled world. She exudes optimism throughout the album, using every positive adjective she can find in the catchy anthem We Are Powerful, and when she says wants to be the happiest she can in bubbly Free, we're convinced.
While My Love's simple beats are reminiscent of The Show, the song that made Lenka a hit, you can hear her edgier side in the R&B Hearts Brighter and Blue Skies, a euphoric dance piece. She goes a little bit country in Unique, and when the trumpets blast in opener The Long Way Home, you can picture her skipping home as little birds chirrup around her.
"We can get together/and we can talk it over/and make it right," she sings in Get Together. Hey, if Hong Kong politicians took a leaf from her book, maybe they could get political reform back on track.
