As the title suggests, this is the sequel to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a comedy about guests forced to live in a hotel in India that is not as great as it sounded in the advert.
In The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel) is finally going to marry Sunaina (Tina Desai). As wedding plans progress, Sonny dreams of opening a second hotel. Enter Kushal (Shazad Latif), who seems to be moving in on Sunaina and the hotel while Sonny is distracted by business.
All the old characters are there, with actors including Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, joined this time around by Richard Gere.
Overall, the lines are funny, the story is moving and there is some marvellous Indian dancing.
But, to the cynics, it seems as if the writers were trying to get every last piece of wisdom and every little cliché, into the script. That is sad because the story would have worked alone, without the desperate tricks.
