Michael Mann's Blackhat might be set in Hong Kong, but don't waste your time [Review]
No matter what I write, loads of you will want to see Blackhat, because: Thor and because: Hong Kong. But really it bombed everywhere else in the world because: Michael Mann. "Blackhat" is a term used for a computer hacker and that's what the movie is about.
A nasty hacker has broken in to a nuclear plant in Chai Wan (see, I told you it was bad), and caused explosions. Just after that, the hacker breaks in to a stock exchange … you get the picture. Enter the hero, Nick Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth), who is in prison and, of course, is the only person who can possibly help the two biggest powers in the world solve this problem.
And of course he has to be sprung from prison by the FBI. Agent in charge, Carol Barrett (Viola Davis), is the best part of the whole film, really.
Director Mann has been lashed for this boring, drawn-out piece of technobabble and rightly so. The opening sequence clues you in to just how bad it's going to be. Run while you still can.
But hey, it's January, there're shots of Hong Kong, and Hemsworth. You could do worse … nah, really, you couldn't.
