The wait is finally over and Mockingjay - Part 1 is here. The story continues from where we left it on Catching Fire. Katniss has destroyed the games after the Capitol forced former victors to enter the arena once again for the Quarter Quell. Now she wakes up in District 13 where the rebels want her to be their "Mockingjay".
It is high action and intense drama from start to finish. When the Capitol bombs fall you feel as if you're standing right next to Katniss. Grab a seat mid-cinema for the best effects; closer to the screen really is better.
Jennifer Lawrence turns in a flawless performance as a more mature and angry Katniss. Her reluctance to be thrust into the limelight juxtaposed with her white-hot rage at Snow is exquisite and emotional. Her supporting cast is equally as strong. Josh Hutcherson's portrayal of Peeta Mellark as he is slowly crushed and dehumanised on Capitol TV is remarkable.
The themes of fear and courage in the face of overwhelming odds have always been central to this franchise, but in this film they are darker.
Lorde has done a masterful job on the soundtrack and there are certain to be hits off it. You won't be able to get the folksy The Hanging Tree out of your head. This is the best THG by far, and sets us up for an epic finish.
