Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions is one for the Yu-Gi-Oh! fans only [Review]
While most final year high school students are worrying about their exams, Yugi Muto and his friends are living a completely different life. Set in Japan, Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions expands on the original animated series and takes a look at alternate dimensions.
Yugi Muto and his friends are trying to figure out what they will do after their graduation, but while they focus on enjoying their last days as students, their nemesis Seto Kaiba manages to find the disassembled Millennium Puzzle – an item never fully explained in the movie – in the ruins of the Millennium chamber. The Puzzle had previously housed the soul of Atem, his rival. Though Kaiba hopes to revive Atem’s soul in order to settle their score (what score though?), someone turns up to challenge Kaiba to a duel and steals two pieces of the Puzzle for himself.
If you don’t know the basics of Yu-Gi-Oh!, then this film may not be for you, as you’ll find yourself lost within the first few minutes. It’s assumed the audience will know what a game arena is, the various relationships between the heroes and villains and even just the roles of the main characters. Without any background knowledge of the stories told, you can’t emotionally connect with the film at all.
