Summer blockbusters were duds this year, but that’s OK: here are 5 big movies that are still to come
Chris Pratt trades in his ray-gun for a six-shooter in the remake of The Magnificent Seven. It’s been a disappointing summer movie season, but there’s still a lot of movie left in 2016. Hollywood studios and Hong Kong audiences alike are hoping that the rest of the year can provide some redemption. Here are five upcoming films that Young Post is excited about.
The Magnificent Seven – September 22
Plot: Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt play two of seven outlaws who are tasked with protecting the residents of a small town from an industrial blockade.
Why we’re excited: Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars join forces in a good ol’ gun-slinging Western. It will be interesting to see how this version holds up to the 1960 original, a film that is a classic of the genre. Director Antoine Fuqua has helmed films such as Training Day and Southpaw.
What to expect: Cowboy boots, guns, horses, confrontation, and a lot of trash-talking between Denzel and Chris Pratt.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – October 20
Plot: To clear his name, Jack Reacher must find out the truth behind a government conspiracy. In the process of his investigation, he discovers he might have a daughter...
Why we’re excited: The action and fight scenes alone would be enough, but now there’s suspense, too: will Jack find his daughter?
What to expect: High-octane action, car crushes, car crashes, and awesome fighting from Tom Cruise.
Trolls – November 3
Plot: Branch, a troll survivalist, goes along with Poppy on a mission to save Trolls Town from the nasty Bergens.
Why we’re excited: It’s a 3D animated musical comedy from DreamWorks Animation. With famous singer-actors such as Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake and Zooey Deschanel, the music alone is reason enough to watch this.
What to expect: Great songs, plenty of laughter, and a LOT of colour – have you seen their hair?
Doctor Strange – October 26
Plot: After a car accident, a surgeon discovers he has some odd powers.
Why we’re excited: Doctor Strange is a bizarre tale even for Marvel Comics. Plus Benedict Cumberbatch seems to turn everything he stars in to gold – even when it’s been precluded by controversy.
What to expect: If nothing else, Cumberbatch should be great; plus Marvel have a knack for telling really good stories.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 17
Plot: At a meeting of wizards in 1926, a whole slew of dangerous creatures escape, causing tension between the magical and non-magical worlds, with some calling for the eradication of all wizards. But Newt Scamander is determined that he can save the day.
Why we’re excited: The 2014 Oscar Best Actor Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt. The movie is based on the book of the same name by J.K. Rowling, so it will be exciting to see if the movie will be as successful as the Harry Potter series.
What to expect: It’s a precursor to everything that happened to Harry et al, so be ready for hippogriffs, doxies and nifflers.
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk – November 11
Plot: Billy Lynn is an American war hero being honoured at an NFL American football game, when he is told he has to return to Iraq. This makes him disillusioned and reflective.
Why we’re excited: The original 2012 novel was an award winner and also incredibly moving and thought-provoking. We’re curious to see if the movie version can live up to those standards. It doesn’t hurt that it is being directed by Taiwanese director Ang Lee, a two-time Oscar winner whose last movie, Life of Pi, was one of the best of 2012.
What to expect: Tears, fast-paced action, sports stadium intensity, flashbacks, and more tears.
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life
Plot: Tired of annoying school rules, Rafe Katchadorian and a group of friends decide to set themselves the challenge of breaking every rule in the school handbook before the year is over.
Why we’re excited: Which student actually loves the fact that school has rules? Rafe is our hero, fighting unfair, nonsensical regulations in a way we wouldn’t dare. We’re just grateful most of our rules, while annoying, make sense.
What to expect: While no release date has been announced yet for Hong Kong, we’re hoping we’ll get to see this adaptation of the multi-award-winning book. It may have been written by an adult, but it’s great when an author really understands what kids and teens go through every day - and we’re pretty sure the director will be able to get his actors to nail those emotions, too.
All Eyez on Me
Plot: This is the first biopic of Tupac Shakur, an American rapper considered one of the greatest of all time. The film will depict his entire career, including his untimely death in 1996.
Why we’re excited: Similar rap biopic Straight Outta Compton was a huge critical and commercial success last year, and Tupac’s life story is just as colourful as NWA’s. What’s more, Tupac’s songs are among the most powerful and influential rap songs of all time, so we’re excited to get a chance to look behind the scenes of his lyrical genius. We’re also curious to see newcomer Demetrius Shipp Jr. in the title role.
What to expect: Rap battles, and some excellent ’90s throwbacks, plus Michonne from The Walking Dead as Tupac’s mother.
Passengers
Plot: In this futuristic love story, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt play two passengers aboard a spaceship travelling to a distant planet. All the passengers have been placed in sleeping chambers until they reach their destination, but Lawrence and Pratt’s characters’ chambers malfunction, meaning they must fend for themselves, decades away from their destination.
Why we’re excited: You could argue that Lawrence and Pratt are two of the most popular actors in the world right now, so their pairing is bound to lead to box-office gold. sure to become an incredible box-office hit. Plus, along with last year’s The Martian, this is one of the more unusual science-fiction plots we’ve heard of for a while.
What to expect: Serious chemistry, life-or-death decision making, Laurence Fishburne. Here’s hoping it comes out in Hong Kong not long after the US release in December.
Collateral Beauty
Plot: Not much is known about the plot of this dramedy at this point. The film’s IMDB page simply states: “A tragic event sends a New York ad man on a downward spiral.”
Why we’re excited: A movie with a synopsis so intentionally vague intrigues us because it is bound to be hiding a good amount of twists and turns. But what really has us anticipating the film (which we’re hoping will come out in HK this year; its release date in the US is December 16) is its cast. Will Smith plays the “New York ad man”, and he is joined by an all-star lineup of Kate Winslet, Ed Norton, Keira Knightley, Michael Pena and Helen Mirren.
What to expect: Any film that can attract this many stars has to have something very promising about it - at the very least, we are looking forward to some excellent performances. Plus, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith said that Collateral Beauty “has one of the best endings of any film that [I’ve] ever been a part of.” Coming from a superstar like him, that means a lot.
