The Good Dinosaur is no match for Toy Story [Review]
What would the world be like if the dinosaurs hadn’t been wiped out by a meteor? According to Pixar’s latest film, The Good Dinosaur, they would be farming and herding cattle in the Wild West.
While the setting and overall “old Western” theme of The Good Dinosaur is a little fake and somewhat off-putting, there’s no denying that Pixar has raised the bar yet again when it comes to animation. Every scene is crafted with incredible, life-like detail, from individual hairs, to the texture of the dinosaurs’ skin, to the incredible scenery.
Which makes the goofy appearance of Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa), a young Apatosaurus trying to find his place in the world, even more strange. It takes a while to get used to this cartoonish dinosaur, especially when he’s placed against such a rich backdrop. But when Arlo meets Spot (Jack Bright), a wild human, it’s hard not to get swept up in the story.
The Good Dinosaur is clearly aimed at a very young audience. But that doesn’t mean the film isn’t hard-hitting or emotional. Some scenes even had the adult men in the audience in tears.
While it might not become a cult classic like Toy Story or Finding Nemo, for the newest generation of Pixar fans The Good Dinosaur will surely be a childhood classic.
