When you think of a journalist or a journalism career, what immediately comes to mind? A person who writes for newspapers or magazines or prepares news to be broadcasted on the radio or television? Correct. But have you ever wondered where they get all their information from and how they could possibly write about anything so vividly and full of details? The answer is first-hand experience.
Journalists and reporters get to see, use, feel, or experience the products, music, movies etc, in order to be able to personally reflect and write about them accurately for the public to read and try themselves. I realise that this is one of the major perks of being a journalist along with the sense of fulfilment and satisfaction you achieve from doing what you love. Who doesn’t love enjoying all the opportunities to try all sorts of things? I was privileged to have such an opportunity to get my hair styled.
I was asked by one of the Young Post reporters if I wanted to get my hair styled at a newly-opened salon in Central for a story and I jumped at the chance. Before going to the actual salon itself, I checked out their website out of curiosity. Airplay Blow Dry Bar was very interesting to me because I don’t think I’ve ever been to a salon that doesn’t cut hair at all. In fact, as you might derive from its name, it focuses only on blowouts, updos and makeup. I was cynical at the idea that my hair styling would be done in “all within 45 minutes!” as the website stated, but after it was done I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
First came the hair washing where the hair stylist used a fragrant ginger shampoo and conditioner. Next, oil was rubbed throughout my hair to protect it and then it was blow-dried. After, incredible technique was shown by the stylist as all my hair was curled and portions on the side were braided to meet at the back of my head in what is known as a ‘fishbone twist’. These plaits were clipped in place using bobby-pins while a small portion of my curled hair was left to flow freely and loosely in the back – the final touch to the airy-fairy updo I think is perfect for teens on a hot summer day.
The whole process took a total of about half an hour and left my hair feeling light, fluffy and fresh. What was also great was the hair stylists were all friendly and conversational, and light snacks and drinks were offered which contributed to the calm and comfortable atmosphere. Throughout the whole process I actually felt like a princess being pampered. This is definitely a place I would love to visit with my friends and the moderate prices make this salon even more appealing to females all around.
To conclude my day at work today, I got my hair beautifully styled and here I am, sitting at a desk telling anyone willing to read this blog about it. If you ask me, I think today’s activities was amazing fun and the perfect way to end the week. Isn’t the life of a journalist exciting?
