A classic Sandra Bullock romantic comedy, The Proposal is a hilarious film about giving in to love.
Rom-com queen Bullock plays evil boss Margaret Tate, the editor-in-chief of a publishing company. Scarlett Johansson's husband Ryan Reynolds is her long-suffering assistant Andrew Paxton who puts his own happiness last in a bid to please this Devil in Louboutins so she'll one day promote him to editor.
The plot is fairly predictable - guy and girl from different worlds hate each other but eventually fall in love - but their journey to a fairy-tale ending is less so. Margaret is intelligent, tough and ambitious, while Andrew is caring and idealistic - he comes from a wealthy Alaskan family, but has left his assured family riches to try his luck in the Big Apple.
When the Canadian Margaret's visa expires and she faces deportation, she blackmails Andrew into agreeing to marry her, so that she can get American citizenship. The pair travels to Andrew's family home to break the 'good news' to his family, and the riotous ride to self-discovery and love begins.
Without giving away too much of the plot, The Proposal gives Bullock plenty of opportunities to demonstrate her trademark slapstick - despite, or perhaps aided by, her stilettos - and proves Reynolds has earned his leading man stripes.
Stay in your seat for the end credits - they're worth the wait.
