Talking points: Things children need to know about their parents

From the hardship of earning money to the childhoods of their parents ... there are a lot of things children don't know about their mums and dads. Of all of these, I believe the most important thing children should discover is that their parents are the only ones who really care about them. Their parents will always be there to support them. When there are family conflicts, children will argue with their parents and think they don't love them any more. The truth is that children are the apples of their parents' eyes. Parents will forgive all their wrongdoings and love their children forever. If children understand this, they are likelier to treasure their relationship with their parents.

Coco Ma, 16, St Paul's Co-educational College

Most children, including myself sometimes, think their parents are annoying and are always trying to put them down. However, parents do care about their children and are just trying to provide the best advice possible. For example, sometimes parents force their children to study hard, which youngsters find annoying. But parents want their children to get better grades so they can later lead better lives.

Minal Daswani, 17, Island School

I guess children should understand that, no matter what their parents do, they are looking out for their children. They always want the best for them. However, this might be a little hypocritical for me to say because I sometimes don't remember this.

Alex Chan, 17, University College London

The most important thing that children should know about their parents is their first names. You see, some children, as reported by a certain newspaper, actually believe their parents' names are "Mum" and "Dad". So, to prevent children from growing up without that gap of knowledge, they should know their parents' first names.

Kerrie Chiu, 17, Singapore International School

Children need to know that their parents are constantly trying to give them the best of everything. Although some children may feel their parents are nagging them over small details, this is only because they care. It is wise to listen to our parents because they are more experienced than we are in most aspects of life.

- If you were given 20 hectares of land in the middle of Central, what would you do with it?

- Which subject would you drop in school, and why?

- What don’t we like about Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying?

- If I could change one thing about myself, what would it be?

- What do you think about e-learning?

- How can we eliminate the problem of caged homes and subdivided flats in Hong Kong?

- "If I were gay/lesbian, I would like to tell the world ..."

- Things I wish to know in life that I never learn about in school

Parents love their children a lot and obviously have some expectations (human tendancy). So I think it is the responsibility of each and every child to realize the dream that their parents see in them and put the best efforts to fulfill it.Children should know that the love and sacrifice of their parents cannot be repaid so we should also love them back and respect them.

Thank you...its a very useful blog!!!(helpful to children)
