China was always going to attempt to assert itself as a military power. A near-superpower, it is the world's manufacturing powerhouse and its no 2 economy. China's military technology has been playing catch-up, and the ADIZ appears part of a move to redraw the boundaries in China's favour. Because it has done so without consultation, it has put states, the public and experts alike on edge.
Open dialogue on this issue is essential. Otherwise, misconceptions could make matters worse.
