You've got a friend in me

The United Nations declared July 30 as International Friendship Day, although it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August in many countries. To mark the occasion this year, we asked our readers what a friend means to them. Here are their answers ...

1. Colourful life

If my life was a canvas, my friends would've been the oil pastels, each friend representing one colour. I'd love to make new friends to add more colour to my life.

Ruby Leung, 16

2. Down but not out

A friend helps you up when you get knocked down; a true friend says: "Stay down, I've got this."

Nola Yip, 16

3. Net gain

A friend is someone who will like all your pictures on Facebook and Instagram so you don't feel like a social outcast.

Erica Kwan, 16

4. What's cooking?

A friend is someone who has seen the worst in you, but chooses to stay in your life anyway. Oh and makes you cookies when you're down!

Ruthie Laidler, 16

5. Food fun

A friend is someone who lets you steal their food at lunch.

Alison Iu, 14

6. Smashing time

A friend is the first person I will "kill" during a group battle while playing the fighting video game Super Smash Bros.

Jocelyn Wong, 21

7. Speaking out

A friend is someone who will honestly tell you that you look fat in your outfit.

Doris Lam, 16

8. Movie fan

When she/he can quote every line of the movie Mean Girls with you!

Mizuki Nishiyama, 14

9. Mind reader

A friend is someone who knows what you're thinking without asking you. It's nice when a friend can tell that you're upset and be there for you without asking too many questions.

Harry Cheng, 17

10. Guiding light

To me, a friend is like a beacon in the dark. They show you the way and guide you through your ups and downs in life.

Michele Chan, 13
