With her bubblegum-pink hair and crystal-encrusted eyes, it's easy to think of Chita Yu, who was born in Macau, as another run-of-the-mill popster. But listen to the songs in R.I.S.E, her second album, and you'll think again. It's filled with meaningful lyrics and solid vocals, injecting fresh talent into Canto-pop.

Best Friends (好知已) is an upbeat song about the importance of treasuring one's soulmate. With lyrics that point out how material pleasures can never triumph over a solid relationship, the song encourages listeners to cherish the people around them.

Another track worth looping on your iPod is Whining Girl (怨女). Although the title suggests otherwise, it is a towering anthem that radiates hope. The last track ends with the line: "Tonight, tonight I've been thinking of you." Wistful and nostalgic, it describes the feeling of missing someone you love but not being able to express it. The honest lyrics allow listeners to relate to Yu's emotions.

R.I.S.E is a mix of dreamy vocals, energetic R&B rhythms and swingy, jazzy tones, but the combination somehow works.
