Ghibli greats

Donguri Republic, a store specialising in character-themed merchandise based on the animated films of Studio Ghibli, opened in Hong Kong yesterday. We asked our readers who their favourite Studio Ghibli character is ...

1. Bananas over baby

Boh in Spirited Away. Although he is literally a big baby, we see him become a loyal, loving boy after he is magically transformed into a rat. Plus, he is super cute!

Jocelyn Wong, 21

2. Strength and spirit

Chihiro from Spirited Away. She was thrown out into the cruel world and was forced to become tougher to survive. Like all adolescents, Chihiro changed from dependent child to independent lady. Chihiro's strength has encouraged me to remain strong when things are not going well.

Juliana Law, 18

3. Soot suits me

Susuwatari (soot sprites) in My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. The black soot sprites with fuzzy hair and two large eyes are the epitome of cuteness!

Nola Yip, 16

4. Little bundle of cuteness

Ponyo from Ponyo. She is so small she can be squeezed into a bottle. She's so cute!

Wendy Ki, 16

5. Silence is golden

Totoro from My Neighbour Totoro. I would like to have a silent friend like Totoro. I could share things I am afraid to tell anybody else, and even though he wouldn't respond, I would know he was listening. As a bonus, I could also relax and travel on his huge, furry back.

Elise Choi, 19

6. Tiny but tough

Arrietty in The Secret World of Arrietty. She's tough even though she's so small. She also had the courage to be friends with a human, even though it was taboo.

Jessie Pang, 17

7. Love wins out

Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle. The 18-year-old girl is so strong and loving. I love the way she expresses her affection and worries about Howl when he is dying as a result of the excessive use of magic during the war.

Kate Ng, 17

8. Fluff is enough

Totoro from My Neighbour Totoro. He is fluffy and looks so cuddly! It would also be so much fun to travel together inside the giant cat bus!

Tacye Hong, 15

9. Fire me up

Calcifer, the fire demon from Howl's Moving Castle. Not only can he fry your bacon and eggs, he can also move a castle! I wish he could help me boil water for cup noodles!

Ruby Leung, 16

10. Pazu the protector

Pazu in Castle in the Sky. He protects Sheeta. Who wouldn't want a knight in shining armour?

Heidi Kwan, 16
